Mercato Coperto
The area around Piazza Mercato in Cattolica is defined by the Mercato Coperto building and the surrounding streets, lined with numerous shops. The distinctive yellow building was opened in 1926 by Italo Balbo, then Undersecretary for the National Economy. With its Liberty-style facade, it is reached via a grand staircase; inside are various food and wine businesses: delicatessens, wine shops, cured-meat shops and fishmongers.
Good to know
- The Mercato Coperto building cost 600,000 lire.
- Under the original plan, the lower floor of the building was meant to be a hall for parties and shows. In the end, public storage units were built instead, as funds fell short of the original project.
- Several markets are held in Piazza del Mercato, the best known being the Christmas market and Cattolica in Fiore (a market devoted to plants).
