The geographical borders of Romagna

Romagna is first of all a territorial and geographical region, with borders that go well beyond the political division of Emilia-Romagna.
Its geographical borders are marked to the north by the river Reno, to the west by the river Sillaro and to the south west by the Tuscan-Romagnol Apennines, as far as Monte Maggiore in the Alpe della Luna. To the south the border follows the watershed between the Conca torrent and the river Foglia, reaching the Focara headland and Gabicce and crossing into the northern Marche. To the east lies the Adriatic Sea.

Romagna takes in towns and villages that belong to the following administrative areas:

• province of Ravenna
• province of Forlì-Cesena
• province of Rimini
• part of the metropolitan city of Bologna (the former province of Bologna), with Imola and the surrounding area
• a few towns in the province of Pesaro-Urbino (Gabicce, Montefeltro)
  
  Historically these are included as well:
• the Republic of San Marino
• parts of the province of Arezzo (Badia Tedalda and part of the municipality of Sestino)
• a few towns in the metropolitan city of Florence (Firenzuola, Palazzuolo sul Senio and Marradi)

Why the historical borders matter

The towns of the Alta Valmarecchia belong to Romagna, a territory whose history and culture have always been bound up with Romagnol affairs.
In 2009, by popular referendum, seven towns of the Alta Valmarecchia (Casteldelci, Maiolo, Novafeltria, Pennabilli, San Leo, Sant’Agata Feltria and Talamello) chose to leave the province of Pesaro-Urbino, in the Marche, for the province of Rimini, in Emilia-Romagna: the reasons given were geographical closeness and a sense of belonging.

Gabicce Mare, Sassofeltrio and Montecopiolo, all of them in the Marche, hope to move to Emilia-Romagna for the same reasons. Gabicce Mare is customarily taken to be the last town on the Romagna coast.
