Rocca Malatestiana di Mondaino

The Rocca Malatestiana di Mondaino is one of the most fascinating defensive buildings inland from Rimini. It opens, with a Neoclassical arcade, onto the round Piazza Maggiore, a feature that lends it great elegance while still preserving its defensive role. Built in the 14th century, it was Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, lord of Rimini, who decided it should have as many as 13 towers, a substantial ring of walls and a series of underground passages and cisterns for use in the event of a siege.

• The Rocca Malatestiana houses the town hall, the Museo Paleontologico and Mondaino's cultural institutions.
• One room of the Rocca contains the “Madonna del Latte” by Bernardino Dolci, a precious 15th-century fresco.
