Piazza delle Conserve

In the old town of Cesenatico stand the Conserve, old stone "wells" once used to store food supplies, above all Adriatic fish.

Piazza delle Conserve is in the old town of Cesenatico, near the Porto Leonardesco. It is  a historic square, notable for the Conserve, very large wells (8 m in diameter, 6 m deep) once used to store food supplies, mainly fish. These wells, built in the sixteenth century, are surrounded by stone walls and used to be filled with ice or snow.
The Conserve are tangible evidence of the importance of seafaring culture and of Cesenatico's role in the history of Romagna.

  • Cesenatico once had 20 Conserve, of which 3 have been restored.
  • Piazza delle Conserve hosts a farmers' market every day, and in summer many tourist and cultural events, such as the Notturni delle Conserve (a classical music series).
