Abbazia di San Gregorio

The history of the Abbazia di San Gregorio in Morciano has very ancient origins. It was founded as a Benedictine institution in 1060 by the Benedictine monk San Pier Damiani. Architecturally it follows Romanesque and Gothic models, reflecting the austerity and character of the Benedictines. A place of prayer and enclosure, it now stands as a ruin, accessible only in the outer area, with most of the roof collapsed.

Good to know

  • The monastery consisted of a church with a large choir where communal religious services were held, a cloister, a refectory, storerooms, a library and living quarters.
  • Around 1500 the abbey became the focal point of power in the town. The Benedictines inherited many landholdings, castles and properties in both the Rimini area and San Marino.
  • It was the Benedictine monks who, thanks to their wealth, reclaimed the land of the Valconca, making it fit for farming, and built roads and connecting routes.
