Basilica Sant’Apollinare Nuovo

The Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo in Ravenna began as a palatine church, later converted to Orthodox worship. Its dedication to Sant'Apollinare dates from the 9th century, when the relics of the saint of the same name arrived from the Basilica di Classe.

The Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo in Ravenna began as a palatine church, later converted to Orthodox worship. Its dedication to Sant’Apollinare dates from the 9th century, when the relics of the saint of the same name arrived from the Basilica di Classe. Striking features include the imposing exterior, with its pedimented facade and cylindrical bell tower, and the grandeur of the interior, with 26 Christological scenes rendered in mosaic during the Theodoric period. A majestic work, and one of the oldest mosaics to have survived to the present day.
