The Prima Torre of San Marino, or Guaita, was built in the 11th century, although its current appearance is the result of later, extensive alterations and restoration. In the 15th century, the Sammarinese fought from this fortress in their war against the Malatesta of Rimini, defending the positions of the Montefeltro of Urbino. For a long time it was the seat of the Guardia della Rocca; then, in 1754, it was converted into a prison, a role it retained until the 1970s.
