La Colonna delle Anella

The Colonna delle Anella (or dell'Ospitalità) is the symbolic monument of Bertinoro. It is a column in the town's main square, built in 1247 to put an end to disputes between local noble families, all eager to host the strangers passing through Bertinoro. On the column were placed 12 rings, one for each noble family: the adventurer or traveller would tie their horse to a ring and be hosted by the corresponding family.

Good to know

  • Every year, on the first Sunday in September, the Festa dell'Ospitalità is held to recall Bertinoro's tradition of hospitality and the story of the Colonna delle Anella.
  • At the base of the column are Latin inscriptions on the theme of hospitality.
  • The families took it in turns to own the rings.
  • The column stands in Piazza della Libertà, overlooked by the Palazzo Ordelaffi and the old Torre dell'Orologio.

Conformance status

The site is built to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA. Conformance is partial: the checks made so far cover the code and the colours, and they do not replace testing with people who rely on assistive technology. Known limits are listed below.
