Museo del baco da seta

In the late 1800s, Meldola was among Italy's leading silk producers. This long tradition led to the founding of the Museo del baco da seta, an exhibition that traces three centuries of history through unusual work tools and an extensive bibliography. At the Museo del baco da seta, visitors can see tools connected with silkworm breeding and others related to spinning and processing the raw material. The museum's collection is completed by a series of illustrations showing the internal structure of the silkworm and the “wood” made up of cocoons of different colours and sizes.

• In the 19th century, silk production involved both far-off countries (China and Japan) and Italy. Meldola, in particular, shared with Como the reputation for the finest quality finished product.
• The Museo del baco da seta is named after Ciro Ronchi, the most important silk spinner in Meldola's history, who lived from the first half of the 1800s into the early 1900s.
• Silk production took place almost entirely within the home.
