Tomba di Dante

It is a neoclassical domed shrine, entirely faced in white and ochre marble. Inside, a plaque depicts the figure of the poet.

The Tomba di Dante lies in the Basilica di San Francesco in Ravenna; it is a domed shrine built in 1780 in neoclassical style. The tomb is a Roman-era sarcophagus faced with marble and stucco, behind which stands a 1483 bas-relief depicting Dante.
Beside the Tomb, a garden opens onto the Quadrarco di Braccioforte, an ancient oratory housing two 5th-century sarcophagi. The Tomb, the Quadrarco and the Museo Dantesco together make up the "Zona del Silenzio", in homage to the great poet.

  • Dante Alighieri spent the last years of his life in Ravenna, where he died in 1321.
  • The Tomba di Dante has been declared a national monument.
  • A legend is attached to the Quadrarco di Braccioforte: it is said that, at this spot, two worshippers swore an oath to the cry of “braccio forte di Cristo” (strong arm of Christ).
