Grotta del Re Tiberio

The Grotta del Re Tiberio lies within the Parco Regionale della Vena del Gesso in the area of Riolo Terme. The Vena del Gesso is characterised by badlands and caves, some of which have long been used and inhabited by people. The Grotta del Re Tiberio is one of these, used for thousands of years and today a destination for tourists and caving enthusiasts. In the entrance hall of the cave are artificial niches and troughs carved from the rock; the interior extends into a complex of chambers once used for funeral rites.

Good to know

  • The Grotta del Re Tiberio is more than 4 km long.
  • The first 60 m of the cave are easy to reach; beyond that, you can only proceed with caving equipment and the permission of the company that owns the quarry.
  • The road leading to the cave entrance is much loved, with several access points to tunnels dug in the 1960s and 1970s along the way.
