Grotte Tufacee

In the eastern part of the hill village, below ground level, there are 160 tufa caves (artificial underground chambers), many of which are open to the public.

Santarcangelo stands on Monte Giove. In the eastern part of the town, below ground level, there are 160 tufa caves (artificial underground chambers), many of which are open to the public. Arranged over three levels, they form a maze of tunnels and stairways interspersed with rooms and niches, which are thought to have been used in Palaeochristian times to celebrate rites linked to the god Mithras. It is more likely that they were used to store wine and as shelters during wartime, especially during the Second World War.

Good to know

  • The Grotte pubbliche Ruggeri can be visited in summer and winter; the tour lasts about 30 minutes on average.
  • Inside the caves the average temperature is 13/14 degrees. Suitable clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended.

Accessibility statement

Conformance status

The site is built to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA. Conformance is partial: the checks made so far cover the code and the colours, and they do not replace testing with people who rely on assistive technology. Known limits are listed below.

How this statement was prepared

Self-assessment by the people who build the site, last updated on 1 September 2026. This is not the statement that the Italian AgID guidelines require of public bodies, which Romagna.net is not: it is a commitment we make anyway.
