Sorgente del Tevere
The source of the River Tiber lies in a beech wood on Monte Fumaiolo, in the territory of Verghereto. Marked by a fountain made from a marble column topped with an eagle, the source is reached along a circular route that starts from Balze (a hamlet of Verghereto at 1,096 m above sea level) following the Alberico mule track. The trail is fairly easy and the full loop takes 3 to 4 hours.
Good to know
- Until 1923 the source of the Tiber was in Tuscany. It was Benito Mussolini who moved the border so that the source would lie in Romagna, the region he came from (Predappio).
- The marble column bears the inscription “Here rises the river sacred to the destiny of Rome”
