Pieve Romanica di San Martino

Dating back to the year 1000, it stands amid greenery in the valley floor, a solid structure with rounded features and a fine bell tower.

The Pieve Romanica di San Martino in Rafaneto stands in the hamlet of Villa Verucchio. Set amid greenery at the foot of the valley, it is a solid structure with rounded features and a bell tower. Dating back to 990, it enjoyed a period of prominence between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance though it fell into disuse in the seventeenth century, eventually becoming a farm storehouse (which is why the façade was rebuilt in the style typical of a farmhouse). Overall it is a highly evocative place, its interior bare and essential, as is typical of Romanesque country churches.
