Borgo Durbecco
A hill village of history and stone, a district of flag-throwers, with small architectural gems such as the Chiesa della Commenda and the Porta “delle chiavi”.
The territory of the Borgo Durbecco district (Rione Bianco) of Faenza begins beyond the Ponte delle Grazie, which links the district to the town centre. Its heart is Corso Europa, a stretch of the Roman Via Emilia, from which the main sights can be reached, including the well-known Chiesa della Commenda.
Also worth a visit are: the Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata (1400s), the Chiesa di Sant’Antonio (1700s) and the Porta delle Chiavi, the only one of Faenza’s town gates still standing.
Good to know
- Borgo Dulbecco is one of the districts that take part in the Palio del Niballo, a race between riders from different districts dating back to the Middle Ages.
- The district is very old: the earliest settlements date back to the 11th century.
- The Chiesa della Commenda is an ancient building with a beautiful cloister and large mosaics of the Romagnol school, once used to host pilgrims travelling towards the Holy Land.
- The upper floor of the Chiesa della Commenda houses the museum dedicated to the history of the Rione Bianco.
- The gate is called “delle chiavi” (“of the keys”) because it was here, in 1857, that Pope Pius IX was presented with the keys to the town.
