Piazza del Popolo

The town's most important square, lined with elegant, imposing buildings, the heart of Faenza's political life since the days of the Signoria.

Piazza del Popolo is the most important square in Faenza. From the 15th century onwards, the town’s political life developed here, the elegant arcades of Palazzo Manfredi were built, and the life of the town was planned around the model of a Signoria. Today the square retains its elegance and gravity, elements it does not share with the adjoining Piazza della Libertà, which instead brings together buildings and monuments of different architectural styles.

Good to know

  • On one side of the square stands Palazzo del Podestà, altered several times to make it symmetrical with Palazzo Manfredi opposite. This gave the square its very square, regular look, typical of the 18th century.
