This is a genuine quarry, created from the end of the 1800s onwards to extract the materials needed to restore the Palazzo Pubblico, the symbol of civic and republican power. There were once plans to build offices on the remains of the quarry, but the outbreak of the Second World War put an end to that possibility. Today the site is used for sporting activities linked to Italian crossbow shooting, a sport widely practised in the ancient Republic.
