La Chiocciola e altre fontane

The Percorso delle Fontane runs through the historic centre of Sant'Agata Feltria and takes in the Fontana della Lumaca, the Luna nel Pozzo and the Impronte della Memoria. The Fontana della Lumaca can be counted among Tonino Guerra's "I luoghi dell'Anima", which find their fullest expression in Pennabilli.

Good to know

• The Fontana della Lumaca (La Chiocciola) was designed by the Romagnol poet Tonino Guerra and carries the distinctive traits of his poetics: slowness and the spirals of life. Decorated with a mosaic of 300,000 tesserae, it is a small gem set atop a flight of steps (between Piazza Martiri d'Ungheria and the upper part of the village).
• The Luna nel Pozzo stands in Piazza Fabbri, at the foot of the steps leading up to Rocca Fregoso. Dating from the 19th century and carved out of the rock, it was once the town's only source of water. In 1997 the vaulted ceiling was decorated with a mosaic depicting planets and stars.
• The Impronte della Memoria are found inside an old drinking trough (Via Benucci) where travellers once watered their animals. The original features have been restored and enhanced; the floor is decorated with a mosaic carpet with an oriental feel.
