Piazza Cavour

Since the 13th century, Piazza Cavour has been the political and economic centre of Rimini. The square is dominated by three adjoining palaces, one next to the other: Palazzo dell'Arengo, Palazzo Garampi and Palazzo del Podestà. At its centre, since 1614, stands the statue of Pope Paul V, with the facade of the Teatro Galli behind it. Slightly set back is the Fontana della Pigna, a Roman-era fountain that the people of Rimini simply call the "Pigna". Near the Pigna is the Vecchia Pescheria, a 1747 loggia with stone counters in Istrian stone where fish caught by local boats was once sold.

Good to know

• It stands at the junction of Via Gambalunga and Corso d'Augusto, the street linking the Arco d'Augusto to the Ponte di Tiberio.
• Palazzo dell'Arengo was built in 1204: justice was administered from beneath the portico at street level, while the Town Assembly met in the rooms on the first floor.
• The Fontana della Pigna was once the city's only source of drinking water.
• The Teatro Galli reopened to the public in October 2018, after being closed for 75 years. It is open for guided tours as well as for events in the theatre programme.
